I'm only recording, right now, to immerse my hearing in the language I'm learning. That could be done at a low bit-rate, even mp3.
But immersion texts are probably of sufficient length to later study syntax and some discourse. The communicative event could be useful for circulation via CD or radio, after some editing. These tasks are best done from source-files of higher quality.
