For our purposes, this is the electrical and digital path through which the desired information travels, to the recording medium.
Something like this:
Microphone >> wiring >> microphone pre-amp >> wiring >> analog/digital converter >> memory

The chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. Therefore:
-If all parts are constructed of quality materials, except for one, that one item reduces the quality of the entire recording.
-All parts of the chain should be able to pass the signal to the desired standards. That is,
---If any piece does not pass all frequencies, 20Hz to 20,000Hz, the narrowest frequency range is what gets recorded
---For every part that passes different frequencies at differing amplitudes, the error accumulates on the recording in an additive fashion.
