Every recorder has with an internal microphone, or a microphone jack, has at least one microphone pre-amplifier inside it. Sometimes these go by mic pre-amp, pre-amp, or simply "pre's". The trouble is, some are good, some are not so good. When internal pre-amps are weak or introduce too much noise, it is advisable to use an external pre-amp. Further questions?
