- Batteries should be replaceable and non-proprietary. Most models will comply, using AA or AAA.
- External microphone jack(s)
- writes to SD Card memory. These are widely circulated, widely supported.
- provides power to external microphones. Many will provide PiP type power. Phantom power is an asset as well.
also nice, but not crucial:
- built-in external monitor speaker
- on-board editing of sound files can be very useful. splitting a file in two parts, deleting portion of the file, copying part, etc.
